In A Memory Of What Never Was
"Are you sure you want to do this?" Clarke whispered. She could barely see him in the dark room with only the silvery glow of a lamp post outside. She could barely hear him over the pounding of her own heart. As nervous as she was someone would have thought she was the virgin but it was actually Clarke.
With a deep breath she nodded and whispered back. "Practically since the moment we met." Even in the dark she could see him smile just before he leaned in to kiss her. Every other kiss before had been quick and equally hidden. This was the first time they could really take their time and it took a lot of planning and subterfuge to make it happen.
Sam missed the days when she could openly go on dates and maybe park with a boy. Her whole day was spent inventing reasons to go see Clarke. Then when they were together it took everything she had not to let her gaze linger too long or reach for him because if the doctors knew how Sam and Clarke felt about each other they would separate them. Romantic relations were strongly discouraged and strictly monitored. Every time two people made it too obvious that they liked each other they were either put in different groups or put on a different schedule so they couldn't see each other anymore. That and ovarian inhibiters were the only way the government could figure out how best to keep them from breeding. They actually thought they could control the Heavenly population. It was a losing battle. They would always find a way.
Clarke found his opportunity when he discovered a crawl space in the back of a utility closet in his lab. It was supposed to give maintanence access to wiring and heating ducts but what Clarke saw was a lack of cameras and the opportunity for time alone with Samantha. Though the really hard part was sneaking her out of her dorm without being caught. It was very cloak and dagger the way they tiptoed down hallways and lurked around corners but the pay off was worth it. One perfect night together.
By morning, their feelings were cemented but fate had different plans. Just a stupid accident of luck and they were caught. Schedules were changed, Sam was no longer allowed to work in the lab, and any time they so much as looked at each other from across the room, a doctor was there putting a stop to it. It was the only thing, about Congress agreeing to let them all go home, that could make release bittersweet. On one hand, they were finally free. On the other, it now put half a country between them where they would likely never see each other again.
